RQ) Is it a good deal to buy individual rail tickets? I’ve tried to price out various options, but pricing varies on booking times etc.

ED)Each European country has its own rail operator, and they have several levels of service to make it a little more interesting. The high speed trains as well as the overnight trains need to be reserved well in advance, and they require payment of a surcharge.
